10. Make sure you are in a position to decide, but not held responsible. Every manager becomes a master of being important. Ensuring that his or her opinion must be sought for every decision, project etc.. However to ensure success they must also be able to dodge responsibility. Responsibility is your enemy and accountability is his hanging man. In order to achieve this make sure you have a fall guy. A person who will be held accountable if the decision turns out to be wrong. However if the decision was right be sure to claim its success.
11. Whenever you are in a meeting on a subject you know nothing about Meta your way out of it. Whatever they are talking about say something to the effect of “I think we should look at this from a higher level”. Sentences that also work are “What is the background of this subject, what is our need?”, “I think our focus should lay on de improvement of (enter subject description), so how do we define improvement?”. You get the idea. The secret is that if you pull it up far enough (go into a meta discussion) you will always come to a point where the discussion becomes so non-specific that everybody can join in. The subject becomes completely lost and a semi-philosophical discussion is started about the meaning of improvement.
